When it comes to covering restaurants, we food writers generally keep a list of the new places we're watching out for.

It's rarely a big list, or a complicated one; it's more just a handful of places we know are in the works and that are going to generate a lot of buzz.

Pescados China Street is one of those restaurants and, while I hate to admit it, I can tell you chronologically and then alphabetically the other food writers in town who beat me to writing about this one.

I can hardly blame them for it; we've all be anxious for this new Oregon Hill spot to open, and after waiting patiently for two years and four months, it finally happened.

Chef-owner Todd Manley officially opened the second Pescados location on Monday, June 27, and the interior transformation of the former Hollywood Grill restaurant alone made it worth the wait.

The restaurant that specializes in a "mix of Caribbean and Latin flavors made with only the freshest local organic ingredients" is vibrant. It's bright chairs, watery blues and electric murals. Truly, it's like walking into a restaurant completely unlike anything else in Richmond. It's fun, yet calm; stylized but not trendy; and, like the neighborhood around it, the staff and owners are absolutely delighted it’s open for business.

The Pescados China Street menu is much like its Chesterfield County counterpart. A menu of Caribbean and Latin-inspired small plates (which are not at all small) are priced around $7 - $10 and are perfect for sharing or serving as a summer meal all unto themselves. The menu also includes a handful of meal-sized salads, $10, and a fresh seafood-heavy entrée selection in the low-to-mid-$20 range.

Right now the restaurant is open for dinner-only (Monday-Saturday), but Manley hopes to start lunch and brunch in as early as two weeks. For the after-work crowd, Pescados China Street is also doing a weekday happy hour (4:30-6:30 p.m.) that includes drink and food specials.

For Manley, it’s all about serving Richmonders the flavors they want when they want them. He even hopes to add a patio down the road, complete with its own kitchen and menu (pig-roasting anyone?).

But for now Richmonders will just have to enjoy this fun, funky new Oregon Hill spot indoors. Take a look at restaurant in our Photo Gallery below.
