On Monday night two Richmond chefs will face-off in a banh mi, a Vietnamese sandwich, cooking contest.
It’s Café Gutenberg vs. the Boka Truck and it all started thanks to a little (OK, a lot) of boasting on Twitter over who made the best Banh Mi Sandwich. After a sell-out day on the Boka Truck, Chef Patrick Harris told the Twitterverse that he sold the best Banh Mi sandwiches in the city. Jen Mindel, owner and chef at Café Gutenberg, took up the challenge and the contest was on, thanks to Jason Guard, a food blogger at RVAfoodie.com, who organized the event.
On Monday, July 26, at 7 p.m., the chefs will face off in a Banh Mi Sandwich Throwdown at Café Gutenberg and all of Richmond is invited to come out an witness the challenge.
Each chef will be tasked with making the best banh mi sandwich, both a meat and vegetarian version.
An Mekong, Mekong owner and Ellie Basch of Savior will judge the meat version.
Robey Martin, Style Weekly restaurant critic, and Jason Guard will judge the vegetarian version.
Attendees will be treated to samples, while they last.
This event is free but donations will be accepted to benefit local organizations working to improve school lunches.
