Starting today, Wednesday, June 2, Richmonders no longer have to drive all the way to way to North Carolina to get a taste of the Outer Banks.
That's right; all the flavor of OBX just got a whole lot more convenient thanks to the opening of Outer Banks Seafood Co. in the former Bottega Bistro spot.
The restaurant's grand opening is tonight and owners Mike Bishal and Chef Wes Stepp have brought more than 25 years of OBX culinary experience straight to Richmonders.
This is the third Outer Banks Seafood Co. for the guys, who have been friends and Southern Shores neighbors for years. They opened the first one in Corolla, NC two years ago, and the second location in Virginia Beach earlier this year. Stepp also owns Red Sky Café in Duck, NC.
This Shoppes at Bellgrade restaurant marks the first one in Richmond for both men, though to Bishal it wasn't that big of a stretch.
Since Bottega Bistro closed its doors last year, Southside Richmonders have been hungry for another dining option.
He's spent half his life in OBX watching Richmonder after Richmonder vacation there, so he knew they had a market for Outer Banks seafood in Richmond.
But that doesn't mean he's taking anything for granted.
"We want people to want to come here," Bishal said.
Service and quality are the first priorities for the restaurant, he said, and he knows competition is fierce in the industry. His plan is to win over Richmond diners first with a smile, then with service and finally with the food.
