Folk Fest Gets Off to a Great Start

Irish band Lunasa played a stirring set opening night at the Richmond Folk Festival.

What a great start to the Richmond Folk Festival...

We stopped by the Folk Festival last night, along with hundreds of other music fans, for an evening of good music, fun, food and socializing.

The weather couldn't be better -- it was just crisp enough to warrant a light fleece or a sweater. Expect more of the same Saturday and Sunday where the forecast calls for perfect Folk Fest weather -- 70s, sunny and not a raincloud in the sky.

We hung out at the Altria Stage for most of the evening where we heard bluegrass from The Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, tamburitza from Otrov, and our favorite, a gorgeous set of Irish music from Lunasa

The Altria stage is a popular spot for families where your kids can run around, roll down the hill and dance in circles on the long green field. But we also saw people hitting the dance floor in the Richmond Times-Dispatch Dance Pavilion for Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials.

Free glo-sticks from SunTrust Bank were the big hit of the night. Kids were flipping glo-sticks around in the dark and volunteers were hulu-hooping with glo-in-the-dark hoops.  If you have some glo-sticks handy and kids in your crew, I recommend tossing a few into your backpack. Free bottleopeners from our crew at Richmond.com were also a happy addition to the festival.

We had a fantastic time at the Fest. And from the looks of the hundreds of people who were dancing, smiling, or chasing their kids around -- it looked like everybody was having a great time too.

If you missed it, you're in luck. There are two more days of great music on Brown's Island.  Check out our Folk Fest Guide where you can find Five to Try at the Folk Fest, info on free performances from Richmond Ballet, parking suggestions and much more.

And if you've paid the Folk Festival a visit -- share your tips of who and what to see.  I'm still thinking about the last song Lunasa played as we walked down the illuminated path to our car...it was absolutely haunting. Make sure to check them out.
