Silver Anniversary

Leadership Metro Richmond is back for its 25th year. The local non-profit community leadership development program was founded in 1980, with its first class graduating in June 1981. Since then, 1,300 people have gone through the program, which is focused on empowering a diverse alliance of Richmond-area leaders to take on a variety of complex local issues.

“The best leadership comes out of a desire to serve one’s community,” said LMR president Tina Egge. “Part of what LMR does is to harness people’s shared passion to improve the area. Through our programs, participants are able to learn more about community issues by having the opportunity to be involved in hands on projects.”

Over the course of the next year, the LMR class – divided into seven community action groups – will work collaboratively on a variety of community projects, which were selected from dozens of prospective assignments proposed by nonprofit organizations throughout Central Virginia.

Right now, what is the single-most important issue facing the Richmond Region as a community? Regional public transportation. The Richmond Region has grown over the years to have outstanding employment centers, housing, medical facilities, educational institutions and commercial/recreational development throughout the region. Access to these destinations, however, is limited due to the lack of a regional public transportation system.

Right now, what is the single-most important issue facing the Richmond Region as a community? Building trust and mutual respect between the officials in the city and adjacent counties. This process would enhance regional cooperation to address tough issues like crime and poverty.

Richmond’s fragmented understanding of itself as “A Community.” Rather than choose up sides, expecting others to leave behind deeply held beliefs, heritage and ambition, Richmond’s lost opportunity AND potential lay in its identity as a city that has passed through and survived social, political and commercial traumas and transitions.

Why do so many people choose to send their children to private school when they live blocks away from neighborhood schools? City neighborhoods need to take responsibility for making their city schools an integral part of the community.

Right now, what is the single-most important issue facing the Richmond Region as a community? I believe the problems are too complicated and too inter-related to be narrowed down to just one. For me, it is a question of “the chicken or the egg.” Some of the more pressing problems include: non-existent family units, children with ever-increasing mental/emotional issues, drugs/crime, diversity issues, job availability, deteriorating neighborhoods, etc.

Right now, what is the single-most important issue facing the Richmond Region as a community? At the moment, recovery from the flash floods; longer term, I’d say a united front. Richmonders don’t like to pull together (except during disasters). Basics like safety, jobs and clean-up are necessary for a better standard of living.
