'This Wonderful Life'

If you are a diehard fan of the holiday film "It's a Wonderful Life," you won't want to miss " This Wonderful Life, " Barksdale Theatre's newest offering. The one-man play condenses the original 1946 Frank Capra film into a charming 80-minute production that has actor Scott Wichmann appearing not only as narrator but also as all of the residents of Bedford Falls.

The play, like its film counterpart, revolves around George Bailey, a frustrated banker who is on the verge of suicide when an angel helps him see what the town would be like if he had never lived.

One of the risks of staging a production that mirrors this beloved film is living up to the greatness of legendary actor Jimmy Stewart who portrayed Bailey. Director John Moon chose Wichmann to handle this task, a decision that was right on the money. Moon's directorial guidance allows Wichmann to do what he does best – entertain.

Wichmann in the role of modern-day narrator sprinkles humorous commentary throughout his rendering of the film's action. He effectively interacts with the audience and often uses that interaction for a laugh. His timing is masterful as are his expressive gestures.

Wichmann slips into each character in the film with ease and agility. His schizophrenic shift in roles moves the play along at a delightful but frenzied pace.

His portrayal of Stewart in the role of Bailey is so realistic that at times you actually see Stewart, not Wichmann on the stage.

While this is a one-man show, it wouldn't be nearly as compelling without the wonderful scenic designs by Adam Karavatakis and the lighting designs of Lynne M. Hartman. Karavatakis' scattering of props around the edge of the stage is quite effective as is the famous bridge where George meets his angel. Hartman's lighting helps kindle the emotions that moviegoers felt as they watched George's fall into depression.

"This Wonderful Life" is a must-see during this holiday season. Wichmann is at his best. His performance is first-rate, a pure joy to watch.
