AWARDS

The Greater Richmond Chamber and the Richmond Human Resources Management Association have teamed up with the Families and Work Institute to recognize organizations that are successfully using flexibility to meet both business and employee goals. Nominations are now being accepted for the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility. Applications are being accepted online at whenworkworks.org through Feb. 28. The award will be presented as part of the 10th Annual Employer All Star Awards at an awards ceremony on May 7 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

 

HEALTHCARE

Rx3 Pharmacy is the first compounding pharmacy in Virginia to earn the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board's Seal of Accreditation, which is a new system of standards created by leading organizations in pharmacy. An estimated 30 to 40 million prescriptions are compounded each year. Compounded medications are prescriptions written by physicians, veterinarians and other legally authorized prescribers and prepared for an individual patient by a specially trained pharmacist. To earn PCAB Accreditation, Rx3 Pharmacy had to complete an extensive application, document its written policies, provide an analysis of its quality procedures and pass an extensive on-site inspection led by compounding experts.

 

PHILANTHROPY

The Dominion Foundation , the philanthropic arm of Dominion , announced that it is providing grants of $1.24 million to nine organizations in Central Virginia, seven of which are in the Richmond area. The grants include:

Richmond Ballet : $150,000 to help the highly acclaimed State Ballet of Virginia expand its tour program into more locations around the state and into West Virginia.

Richmond Symphony : $150,000 to help the symphony build on its recent successes through reaching out to new audiences in Richmond and surrounding areas with free concerts, special musical opportunities for students and other programs.

Virginia Opera : $150,000 to support Virginia's extraordinarily successful opera company, which performs statewide and has the largest in-school touring program in the nation.

Richmond History Makers : $120,000 to support the group's efforts to recognize and promote the accomplishments of both everyday citizens and outstanding organizations. Richmond History Makers is a program of the Valentine Richmond History Center.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden : $120,000 to support GardenFest and its growing use of energy-efficient LED lights in its award-winning holiday lighting program.

Richmond Police Foundation : $100,000 for the department's program to further reduce the city's crime rate by helping more than 1,000 young persons stay in school and avoid gangs.

Virginia War Memorial : $100,000 to help build the Phyllis and Paul Galanti educational center with an outdoor amphitheatre, training and research space, additional room for exhibits and permanent storage, and a computer education program.

Tidewater Fleet Supply has leased 16,968 square feet at 3405 W. Moore St. in Richmond. R. Scott Douglas handled the lease negotiations.

Style Inc. has leased 11,665 square feet in Exchange Place at 1313 E. Main St. in Richmond. Jeffrey S. Bisger, Pete Waldbauer, Mac Wilson and Suzanne L. White handled the lease negotiations.

Backaldrin of America, LLC has leased 9,000 square feet in Northlake Trade Center at 10520 Northlake Park Drive in Ashland. Evan M. Magrill handled the lease negotiations.

Robert A. Walker has leased 4,200 square feet in Newbridge Square Shopping Center at 6027 Nine Mile Rd. in Richmond. C. Lee Warfield III and Lindsey C. Floyd handled the lease negotiations.

Sabatino's Automotive, LLC has leased 4,000 square feet in Brandy Centre at 7440 Brandy Creek Drive in Mechanicsville. R. Scott Douglas and Franklin Bell handled the lease negotiations.

Atlantic Constructors, Inc. has leased 3,915 square feet in Deep Run Centre II at 3959 Deep Rock Road in Richmond. Evan M. Magrill and Jason Guillot handled the lease negotiations.

Counterstorm, Inc. has leased 3,279 square feet in Boulders II at 7400 Beaufont Springs Drive in Chesterfield County. Austin H. Newman handled the lease negotiations.

K & M of VA, Inc. has leased 2,255 square feet at 8405 Glazebrook Ave. in Richmond. Mark E. Douglas and Brian K. Berkey handled the lease negotiations.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe has leased 1,800 square feet in Westchester Commons in Chesterfield County. Connie Jordan Nielsen and John K. Nielsen handled the lease negotiations.

VA Realty & Relocation, Inc. has leased 1,752 square feet at 6722 Patterson Ave. in Richmond. Austin H. Newman handled the lease negotiations.

Granny Wades has leased 1,700 square feet at 1316 E. Cary St. in Richmond. John K. Nielsen handled the lease negotiations.

Anthem Health Care Plans of Virginia, Inc. has leased 1,537 square feet at 700 E. Main St. in Richmond. Mark E. Douglas handled the lease negotiations.

Campbell Pedorthics, Inc. has leased 1,171 square feet in Huguenot Place at 1520 Huguenot Rd. in Chesterfield County. Jason Guillot handled the lease negotiations.

 

TRAVEL

Richmond International Airport recently reported that 2007 passenger traffic set a new record of 3.63 million travelers, an increase of more than ten percent over the previous record set in 2006. Since the arrival of AirTran Airways, JetBlue Airways, and Skybus Airlines, RIC passenger traffic has increased 46 percent (3,634,544 in 2007 vs. 2,496,230 in 2004) in three years. In addition to setting a new annual record for passengers, with December traffic up 2.5 percent, the airport's string of consecutive months reporting growth stretched to 31.

 

MISCELLANEOUS

The Greater Richmond Chamber is now accepting applications for a new mentoring program, MENTOR Richmond . MENTOR Richmond is a program that allows 12-15 young professionals to meet with Greater Richmond region mentors. Mentors representing both Fortune 500 and small local companies have been chosen to represent different sectors of the local economy. Each month a mentor will meet with the group to share insights on success. Applications are available online at MENTORrichmond.com and must be received by Friday, Feb. 15. There is a $299 fee to participate. MENTOR Richmond is the second program targeting Richmond-area young professionals launched by the Chamber within the past year. HYPE, Helping Young Professionals Engage, was launched in April 2007 .
