VMFA publication wins AAM award.
A VMFA publication, "Modern and Contemporary Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts ," has won an honorable mention for design in the American Association of Museum's annual publications competition, the only nationally juried competition of its kind.
The book was designed by Jean Kane of the VMFA staff.
"Modern and Contemporary Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts" is an updated survey of postwar art (1945 to 1960) in the VMFA collection. Presented in three sections -- paintings; sculpture and video art; and prints, drawings, photographs and collages -- the book includes images ranging from a 1948 drip painting, "Number 15, 1948," by American artist Jackson Pollock (1912 to 1956) to a circa-1952 photograph, "Bridalveil Fall," by Ansel Adams (1902- to 984). The cover features a detail from the Pollock work.
The book was written by John Ravenal, VMFA's Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.
The AAM competition, now in its 25th year, recognizes excellence in the graphic design of museum publications. Winners are chosen for overall design excellence, creativity, and ability to express an institution's personality, mission or special features. The panel of judges included graphic designers, museum professionals and publishers.
A complete list of winners is on the association's website (www.aam-us.org). The winners are featured in a special section of the July/August issue of Museum magazine.
