New college graduates, members of the so-called millennial generation, are different from their Baby Boomer bosses, but they still look for many of the same things when seeking employment. Strong benefits packages top the list of employment desiderata. Two thirds of the grads surveyed look for comprehensive benefits packages including healthcare, 401k plan, childcare and domestic partnership benefits. Starting salary ranks a close second. Job location rounded out the top three considerations: 60 percent said it was important.

But new recruits also say they want an "intellectually challenging environment" and value "work-life balance," said Matt Schuyler , Cap One's human resources chief. Accordingly, the consumer finance company has taken a more holistic view of the work experience.

The company's "Future of Work" program provides an environment that allows employees – Cap One calls them "associates" – to balance their professional and personal lives. The program integrates mobile technology such as laptops, BlackBerry devices and open-air offices to provide a flexible work environment.

College grads receive an iPod when they accept an offer to work with the company preloaded with books like "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell and "How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci" by Michael J. Gelb. The idea is to encourage them to learn remotely and at their own pace, as compared in a more regimented classroom environment. Capital One believes that work is what you do, not where you do it. Read more.
