Since the last Artwalk, Autumn has officially arrived and the weather has transitioned from generally hot, humid and unpleasant to charmingly cool and comfortable. And with First Friday's offering up good weather, new art, live music and refreshments, there's no excuse to stay at home.

Simply grab your favorite light sweater or jacket and head to the street. After all, this month's Artwalk will also feature the Opening Night of the annual 2nd Street Festival presented by Venture Richmond .

The street festival, which typically attracts approximately 45, 000 people every year, celebrates Richmond's African-American community. Come out for live music on four stages, children's activities, soulful food, a unique shopping experience in the marketplace and street dancing.

Savor the Friday Night Kickoff Party at the Waverly R. Crawley Main Stage (2nd & Marshall Sts.) with Johnny Houston & The Legends from 6 to 9 p.m. And be sure to make time for the 2008 Second Street Poster unveiling featuring art of Larry "Poncho" Brown at the Metropolitan Business League from 6 to 9 p.m.

The festival continues on Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

But in case you don't feel quite so spontaneous and are more inclined to revel in a traditional Artwalk, take some time to plan before you head out. And to help, Richmond.com has a complete preview to tonight's ArtWalk. Keep in mind that all galleries are open from 6 to 10 p.m. with opening receptions beginning at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
