Swinging in September

Summer may be ending but that doesn't mean the "shag" is going out of style. On Thursday evenings in September, the Science Museum of Virginia wants to help Richmonders dance their way into fall with four weeks of music and good times to be had by all, during Swinging on the Tracks .

Select exhibits will also be open during the concerts, including the " Hubble Space Telescope: New Views of the Universe" exhibit where you can explore the closest planets to farthest galaxies.

Below, Richmond.com gives you a sneak peak at the bands the Science Museum has in store. Kick off the season with the KOS Band to the final performance by The Tony Rice Unit , Swinging on the Tracks is a great way to celebrate the coming of fall.

KOS Band

Hold onto that feeling of being at the beach with this Motown, swing and pop group. Bringing you the best hits from the 1970's through the 90's, the KOS Band will have you singing, "I love Beach Music" at the top of your lungs. Richmond's own rockers, Sister Sweet, will open the show.

Bio Ritmo

Looking to spice up your September? This Richmond-based, eight-member salsa band has just the right mix of Afro-Cuban flair and traditional Puerto Rican beats to keep you on the dance floor all night long. To help set the mood, the Richmond Afrobeat Movement will open.

The Blue Dogs

Echoes of bluegrass, jam band sounds and commercial roots pop-rock playfully fall together for The Blue Dogs, landing them somewhere between the right of Americana and the left of mainstream Nashville. Richmond's classic rockers, the Poston Brown Project open.

The Tony Rice Unit

To round out the Swinging on the Tracks series, the acoustically gifted Tony Rice Unit will paint the Museum with sounds music ranging from straight-ahead bluegrass to jazz-influenced new acoustic sounds and songwriter-oriented folk. The 2004 winner of the "Best Americana/Jam Band" award at the Virginia Music Awards, Jackass Flats will open the show.

Swinging on the Tracks performances will be held from 6 to 10 p.m., every Thursday evening in September, rain or shine, in the Anna L. and T. Fleetwood Garner Pavilion at the Science Museum of Virginia . Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and guests may enter through the gates at the rear of the parking lot on the west side of the Science Museum.

Tickets are $20 for the four-week series or $10 for a single event. Children 12 and under are free. Refreshments will be available and no coolers will be permitted.
