Fun at the Fair
The State Fair of Virginia opens today, Sept. 25, at the Richmond Raceway Complex. And after 154 years in the Richmond area, the State Fair is moving on. So how will you spend this classic Richmond event one last time before it's moved to Caroline County? The SFVA is an annual family event filled with of plenty of activities to do for the 11 days it is held (Sept. 25 to Oct. 5). From demolition derbies to pig races, there is sure to be something for everybody.
New Attractions
One of the new attractions at the fair this year is the Rosaire-Zoppe Chimpanzees Show , which features three Wild West themed shows daily. The SFCA Web site says, "You will be truly amazed with their antics as well as the world's only trick and fancy horseback riding chimp." The Great American Duck Race of New Mexico , Cowboy Mounted Shooting , Clydesdale Ridge Six Horse Hitch and the " Big Aerial Show " are also new this year.
Returning Attractions
One returning favorite is the demolition derby which takes place on Oct. 3, 4 and 5 with the new figure eight race and rollover competition. The ever favorite and famous racing pigs will also make their return which will have five performances daily.
A popular attraction that is returning for another year is the Extreme Canines Stunt Dog Show which features three performances daily. The SFVA Web site introduces the dogs by stating "America's favorite stunt dogs soar, spin, jump and fly! From back flips to hand stands these 'Extreme Canines' perform big air stunts and comedy antics."
The Masters of the Chainsaw will also be returning with three shows daily. According to the SFVA it's "one of the finest professional chainsaw sculptors in the world combines both speed and artistic ability to create a collectible piece of art at every show." Each sculpture carved in the show will be auctioned off on the final day of the fair, Oct. 5.
Concerts and Live Performances
There are many concerts at the SFVA, like Phil Vassar with Kellie Pickler , Drake Bell and Rooney at the Classic Amphitheatre . All of those shows are $25. Colgate Country Showdown , Praise–Palooza , Kings of Swing and Step Show and Competition are a few of the free concerts that are included with fair admission.
Tickets and Pricing
Tickets for one day (walk around ticket) are $8 Monday through Friday after 5 p.m., $11 any weekday and $13 Sat and Sun. Walk Around Season Passes can be bought for $19 through Sept 24 and can be bought for $26 at the fair. Ages two and under are admitted free. Military discount pricing is also available.
