A Date with Strawberry Hill
At last year's Strawberry Hill races.
They had a date with fate in Casablanca. We have a rail to walk around and get wasted at the Strawberry Hill races. And we wouldn't miss it for the world.
The Strawberry Hill Races are running again this weekend. It's a Richmond rite of spring where the horses race at Colonial Downs and Richmonders pack the rail with tailgating parties.
The theme at this year's races is Casablanca. We've got suggestions for what you could do and what you should do to celebrate at Strawberry Hill.
What to Wear
What you could do: Lord knows it's just weird to dress up like the theme, unless you're over 45 and super rich and have nothing better to do.
What you will do: Girls, wear your cute new spring dress. Who cares if it's pouring rain? Who cares if it's freezing cold? The race is the place for seeing and being seen -- plain and simple. Short, long, floral print, wrap, we don't care. Just make sure it's cute and relatively comfortable. (Check out our Guide to Spring Dresses here.) Guys, wear a shirt. Listen to the voice of reason. It will increase your chances ten-fold.
Drinks:
What you could do: Go the Casablanca route with champagne cocktails, French 75s, Cointreau and brandy. A shaker full of martinis. An ice luge in the shape of the Eiffel Tower.
What you will do: Ice box filled with PBR, Miller Lite, a handful of Red Bull and something shot worthy like tequila or vodka. If you do manage to plan ahead, the ever popular Jello shots. And the ice luge. Only yours looks more like the Eiffel Tower after an earthquake. But after a few hits, who cares?
Illicit Love:
What you could do: Stage a steamy lip-lock scene in the rain with a handsome stranger from your past.
What you will do: Make out with your ex-boyfriend who you spotted walking around the rail with somebody not as good looking as you. Snag him. Go at in the rain.
How to Get Out of an Awkward Conversation:
What you could do: Fly away on a private chartered jet.
What you will do: Keg stands. Lots of them.
Monkey
What you could do: Rent one for the day.
What you will do: Bring your cousin Earl. Same diff.
Food:
What you could do: You could recreate Rick's American Cafe. Palm trees, white tableclothes, little canapes and pots of tea. All on the back bed of your pick-up truck.
What you will do: Bags of chips, pretzels and Fun'yuns. McDonald's. An old PB&J you found in the backseat of your car. But please, eat something. Whatever it is. It's a long day and it's all about the pacing. Put some power bars in your pocket if you have to. Because the Strawberry Hill Races only come around once a year and you need to make it around the rail.
Have fun!
