Perriello declares victory in 5th; Goode has not conceded
Democrat Tom Perriello is declaring victory in Virginia's 5th Congressional District, but Rep. Virgil H. Goode, Jr. has not conceded and is citing what he calls election irregularities.
"With the votes in and the extensive bipartisan canvass process effectively complete, the results are clear: Virginians want change in Washington to get this economy turned around," Perriello said today at his campaign office.
"I am proud and humbled to be elected as the next congressman from the 5th District of Virginia."
As of 2:32 p.m., Perriello led Republican Goode by 745 votes in the Southside district, according to the State Board of Elections. That is within 1 percentage point, which means Goode has the right to request a recount.
Meantime, Democrat Glenn C. Nye III, the congressman-elect in the 2nd District, said he hopes to serve on the House Armed Services Committee. Rep. Thelma Drake, R-2nd, conceded late Thursday night in the district in and around Virginia Beach.
