Dean Fields Comes Home

Dean Fields didn’t have to click his heels three times to realize there’s no place like home.

The singer-songwriter lived in many different cities performing his music and living his dream, but felt that his hometown of Richmond was the right fit for him.

“I’ve spent so much time chasing music scenes," Fields says. “I lived in places like Boston, Nashville and Miami and always felt that weird disappointment in their [music] scenes. I felt like I was seeing the other side of the curtain and it wasn’t this great thing that I thought it was. It felt easier and more relaxed to be a part of the music scene here in Richmond.”

Fields, whose musical influences are (“in order,” he says) Jim Croce, the Smashing Pumpkins, Lucinda Williams and Joe Henry, started making music in 2001 while living in Miami. He blends a mix of folk rock with alternative Americana to create a sound that is natural and almost melancholy.

His recent homecoming has found Fields selling out shows in Richmond from the Canal Club to his upcoming Nov. 7 show at Capital Ale House, which he couldn’t be any more excited about.

“This is going to be our show. No opener or anything … just us playing.”

Fields plans to play songs from his most recent release Everything Just Happened the Way That It Happened as well as some new stuff he’s been working on.

“I have tons of half written songs. About eight are done and ready to go. I’m working on the demos now. I like testing new things at my shows.”

But to Fields, the best part of being home is the music community.

“When I work with all these different musicians, I’m invited into their circles more than I would have otherwise. They wouldn’t necessarily go into a record store and buy my record, but they almost trust me [and the music] because of the other people I’ve played with.”

And for the future, Fields is working on new material for a tentative new album. In the meantime, he’s keeping busy with playing shows, teaching music and planning a wedding with his new fiancée.

“There's hardly any downtime and there's a lot I do, but it's good to be home.”
