2009 Valor Award Winners

The Retail Merchants Association (RMA) awarded its 2009 Valor Awards at a plated breakfast today, Nov. 6 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

The Valor Awards honor "first-responders for courageous acts [protecting] the individuals and communities in which [Richmond] live[s] and work[s].

"Every year gives us even more reasons to appreciate the extraordinary and unusual acts of bravery that keep us safe," said Nancy Thomas, President and CEO of Retail Merchants.

According to the RMA, "Nominations for the Valor Awards are submitted by Chiefs of Fire, Police, EMT’s in the City of Richmond, Town of Ashland, and Counties of Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico. A selection committee of RMA members determines the recipients."

The 2009 Valor Award winners are:

Gold Valor Award, Deputy Sheriff Richard R. Doran, Henrico County Division of Police

Silver Valor Award, Sergeant Edward W. Smith, Hanover County Sheriff’s Office

Bronze Valor Award, Officer Travis W. VonCanon, Richmond Police Department

Bronze Valor Award, Officer Daniel Awad, Richmond Police Department

Bronze Valor Award, Officer Chad Collins, Richmond Police Department

Recognition of Outstanding Regional Cooperation:

Accepting this award on behalf of their departments:

Chief Robert Creecy, City of Richmond Dept. of Fire & EMS

Chief Edward Senter, Chesterfield Co. Fire & EMS
