Why Richmond, Why?!?: New Stores & Shakes
I would like to know what is going in the remodeled vacant store front that used to be Mio’s Pizza beside Douglas Freeman High School. Has a lease been signed for the location?
-- Stormy
OK, this is an old question and it’s taken me awhile to get it answered. I email-stalked the property manager for about two years and then, bam, when I wasn’t looking a whole new store cropped up in the space at 8801 Three Chopt Road. An Einstein Bros Bagels, to be exact, which opened on September 29.
Sorry it took so long!
Why did the Shockoe Espresso & Roastery change its signature "Shockoe Shake" name to the bland and uninteresting title "espresso shake?"
-- West Ender
I spoke with Ryan Wirt, barista, at Shockoe Espresso. He says, "Our menu is streamlined with all our other stores. It’s Quality Assurance." The beloved Shockoe Slip coffee shop owns several stores in Roanoke and Southwest Virginia (they go by the name Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea there), so the idea is to give all the customers one uniform menu.
Of course, Wirt says, if you want to keep calling it the Shockoe Shake, go right ahead. Plenty of customers and most of the employees still call it that too.
