Does Disorganization Make You More Organized?

The Neat Organizer

An article in The New York Times suggests the more "nonsense" we live in, the more we work to create order or find familiarity. It's an interesting concept and I am eager to learn more about what they find while they research further.

As I was reading this article I felt the need to put things into perspective. To make it, make sense (ironic ... I know) in the context of what I do for a living.

I find when my environment is in complete disorder I tend to get irritable. Before I can focus on anything, I have to organize and clean up. Then, and only then, can I get to work. But so many other people I know are perfectly fine working in a cluttered, and I mean cluttered, environment. With this being said, I am left to think that we eventually become desensitized. Therefore we eventually stop trying to create order.

The desensitization is a coping mechanism so we don't lose our minds.

Think about all the advertisements we see in a day. If we tried to take them ALL in and make sense of them, we might burst. However, in isolated situations I can understand the need to create order. So let's put it this way ... if you're feeling like you're losing focus, and need to be more productive, read something that doesn't make sense. Like your credit card bill. Then go back to working. According to this study you might be more effective.
