What you can see at the VHS this weekend.

Stop by the Virginia Historical Society this Saturday, October 24 for a free viewing of a rare Declaration of Independence copy that was printed within 24 hours after Jefferson drafted the original.

You won't see any John Hancocks on this oversized poster, but you will see what the Declaration of Independence looked like the day after it was drafted and distributed to the thirteen states, King George in England, and George Washington to be read to the soldiers of the Continental Army.

The document is one of only 26 known original printed copies. It measures rougly 19 by 15 inches and is enclosed in an airtight case where it's shielded from temperature and humidity change. And it'll be on view at VHS for one-day only on Saturday, October 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. And it's completely free.

“Seeing the Declaration of Independence firsthand enables Virginians to engage in a unique and exciting way with a piece of history that is the foundation of our nation, helping to build their community and civic awareness,” says Riley Wade, vice president for the Pearson Foundation which is responsible for bringing the visiting document to Richmond.

Future stops for the Declaration include Monticello and Virginia Beach.
