The Carnival of 5 Fires Brings the Dark Arts

Enter the dark and mysterious carnival and you never know what dark and horrific things will await you.

The 5th annual Carnival of 5 Fires, Gallery5’s most extravagant event of the year, will feature fire performers, burlesque dancers, puppeteers, magicians, sideshow freaks, vaudeville acts and much more. People travel from around the state to witness the popular event.

After the “Carnival Peep Show” was shut down by the police last First Friday, there was concern that the actual festival would face additional problems. However, after meeting with the cops and the city, Gallery5 will be closing down the side street for the festival.

“This works to our advantage and will really have more of the festival vibe that we've always wanted,” says Parker, one of the event’s organizers. “Also due to this, we probably will have street vendors and more outside performances. And we’re beefing up Halloween night even more with the inside entertainment.”

This year, the Carnival of 5 Fires takes place over Haloween weekend and each evening’s line-up is full of some of the most provocative, freakish, and scary arts the city has to offer.

On Friday, Oct. 30, Sugar Shack Burlesque will present the Dark Queen's Boudoir: A Burlesque Variety Show. Burlesque will be the main event all evening with performances by many of Richmond’s finest dancers including Eerie Twilight, Deanna Danger, Deepa Dejour, Bailey, Boo Boo Darlin and Miss RunAround Sue.

For hundreds of years, The Dark Queen has been collecting her favorite pets - living dolls of mystery and vice. For one night, you are invited into her den to see her collection of Southern Gothic Oddities. Be warned... her enchanted creatures are more intoxicating then the opium dens she often frequents. In honor of All Hallow's Eve, The Queen has granted permission to the citizens of Richmond to attend her yearly festival of lascivious beauty. Come sit at her table, feast on her bounty, and fall in love with the dark arts....

Saturday, Oct. 31, Halloween night, will be home to Circus of Lost Souls: The Halloween Party. The party features performances by Lonesome Liz's Mojo Sideshow, Spiked Punch and Scona of Sweet Tease Burlesque, Horrorshow Hot Club, No BS Brass Band, The Hotdamns, Punk Sinatra, G5 Fire Performers and PLF. There will also be tarot card reading by the Aquarian Bookstore, a costume contest, raffle, dance party and more.

On Sunday, Nov. 1, the Gumbo and Ghosts: Dinner Theater and Séance will include theater and musical performances by Lonesome Liz’s Mojo Sideshow, Alison Self, Thea Duskin, Horrorshow Hot Club, Annotated Zombie Stringband and Spiked Punch and Scona of Sweet Tease Burlesque.

All events at the Carnival will start at 7pm (Saturday's events start at 8pm). Cost ranges from $10 to $15 and Saturday night is cheaper if you come in costume.

And remember kids, don't take candy from strangers - even if they are seductively beautiful or have serious mucial talent.
