Valentine's Day Brunch
Start off your Valentine's Day extra special with one of these brunch spots.
Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year, which means…
Bring on the mimosas, the fancy eggs and hollandaise for Valentine’s Day brunch!
Who needs a super expensive dinner out when you can celebrate first thing in the morning with Valentine’s Day brunch?
Check out these romantic spots that just happen to be serving some of the best brunch dishes in town.
Millie’s
A Richmond favorite. Is it the Devil’s Mess ($8.95), the Eggs Benny ($13.95) or the little jukeboxes that make Millie’s so good? Our favorite: BLAT ($6.95), that’s bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado on toasted whole wheat. Yum. Just be sure to get there early to get in line. There is always a wait. Opens at 9 a.m.
Can Can Brasserie
Always a good bet. A grapefruit brulee ($5) glazed with caramelized sugar is a great way to start the day. Their light, fluffy quiches ($9.50) are always a delight. Or the crepes filled with Nutella, banana and hazelnut ($11.50) are super for a sweet tooth. Opens at 9 a.m.
The Boathouse
Want your Valentine’s Day brunch with a water view? Head to either Boathouse location. Check out the lake view at Sunday Park in Brandermill or make a bee-line for the Boathouse’s new downtown spot at Rocketts Landing, with a spectacular view of the James River. Opens at 11 a.m. at Sunday Park, 10 a.m. at Rocketts Landing. Check out our slideshow of The Boathouse at Rocketts Landing.
The Black Sheep
This little Jackson Ward eatery has been at the top of everybody’s list. Swing by for down-home fare like grillades and grits ($7), pork cutlets pounded thin and served over cheesy grits with gravy. Or try the South Anna scramble ($10), which combines smoked trout, artichoke hearts and chives with hollandaise and toast points. Positively sinful. Opens at 9 a.m.
Café Gutenberg
Head to Café Gutenberg and pretend you’re in Paris for brunch. Try their variety of waffles ($6-$7.25): plain, Belgian or pumpkin spiced, all topped with whipped cream; corncakes, lox and eggs ($8.95) or the 17th Street Scramble ($8.25). Opens at 8 a.m.
Café Rustica
For a delicious and affordable brunch, check out Café Rustica downtown. They’ll be serving specials for Valentine’s Day like poached eggs Roquefort ($10) served over rare steak with a bleu cheese sauce plus standard regulars like the Mediterranean short stack, two shrimp, scallop and crabmeat cakes, served swanky over poached eggs with hollandaise ($10) and delicious quiches ($10). Opens at 11 a.m.
The Jefferson
Want to wow her? Take her to the Jefferson’s champagne Sunday brunch—that is if you can get in. They currently have a waiting list, but it’s worth a shot. Their brunch buffet features tables of fresh seafood, salads, roast meats and fantastic pastries. Plus, the jazz trio and continuous champagne don’t hurt either. And besides, does it get more romantic than the Jefferson? $42 per person. Call 649-4677 to get on the wait list.
Water Grill
Try Carytown’s newest romantic eatery, the Water Grill for brunch. The menu features items such as banana caramel French toast ($7), banana walnut pancakes ($7) and a wide variety of egg dishes and omelets. The fried green tomato Benedict ($10) with smoked bacon and toasted chive hollandaise sounds delicious. Opens at 10:30 a.m.
The Berkeley Hotel
For a fancy brunch served tableside, try the Berkeley Hotel for omelets, pancakes and waffles and a variety of egg dishes. The setting is swanky, but the price points aren’t. Most dishes run $8 to $13. And, if you like chicken and waffles ($14), this is the spot to try them—Chef Ty’s fried chicken breast is served over Belgian waffles with just a touch of honey. Opens at 7:30 a.m.
The Hard Shell
The Hard Shell serves up a hearty Sunday brunch that’s not just for seafood lovers. From hot cakes and eggs to the classic or crab-cake eggs Benedict, there’s something for everyone at this romantic Shockoe Slip spot. Opens at 11:30 a.m.
Lulu’s
Can’t get into Millie’s? Get in the car and backtrack a few blocks to Lulu’s, across from the 17th Street Farmer’s Market. Lulu’s serves up wow-worthy dishes—from omelets and poached eggs to breakfast sandwiches and frittatas ($8-$12). We especially like the sound of the Mexican braised pork tacos with white cheddar, salsa and lime sour cream sauce ($12). Opens at 10 a.m.
Kuba Kuba
The Spanish-style omelets ($6.95-$7.95) and huevos Kuba never fail to impress. Add the spicy atmosphere, the Cuban music and a café con leche ($3) and we’re in heaven. Opens at 9 a.m.
Weezie’s Kitchen
The Carytown spot serves breakfast every weekend and offers a variety of eggs any style, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes and breakfast burritos ($7-$8). Opens at 8 a.m.
The Grill at Waterford
You don’t have to drive downtown to get a nice brunch. This new Midlothian spot serves up a tasty breakfast every weekend. Nothing fancy—expect a good old-fashioned breakfast with eggs, sausage, pancakes, cheese grits and more ($4.50-$7.95). Opens at 8 a.m.
