In the immediate aftermath of September 11, 20-year-old college student Valarie Kaur went on an epic journey across America to document the hate violence against minorities that had so increased since the attacks. Her film, "Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath" is the result, and it will play at the Virginia Holocaust Museum this Sunday at 2 p.m. The film examines the idea of "who counts as an American." Since September 11, a violent backlash on America's own soil has taken place, effecting Sikh, Arab, South Asian, Latino and other brown-skinned Americans. The first person murdered ...

Sargeant Reynolds Community College is hoping to attract new students this fall -- and save them gas at the same time -- by offering a number of core courses on Fridays at its Parham campus. The school's "Fuel Smart Fridays" program would allow students to earn credits in as many as four subjects by attending classes on Fridays only during the fall semester. Eight classes in six subjects (math, English, art, history, psychology and information technology) are available. School officials estimate that a student who otherwise would have traveled 100 miles a week to and from five days of ...

But the story of Gross Breesen is one such story. In 1930s Germany, Dr. Curt Bondy , a protégé of the Jewish educator and philosopher Martin Buber, felt the winds of change blowing in Germany. As an antidote to increasing Nazi oppression, he established a training farm on the German-Poland border for Jewish youth to teach them agricultural skills that could be of use when they emigrated. In addition to farm work, the students studied Jewish history and culture, and Bondy inculcated ...

Considering that it already averages about 30 visitors daily, it's not surprising that a new shelter has been in the works for several years. The new facility at 10421 Woodman Road is not only centrally located, but better able to cope with the growing needs of Henrico County. The previous facility, located on Dabbs Road in eastern Henrico, had become too cramped to sustain the growing number of animal occupants. But for at least one local organization, reading and literacy events are best celebrated with a commotion – or even a disruption – and set against a background of throbbing chrome and steel machines and the roar of powerful engines. When two dozen Riders for Readers rolled onto the Laburnum Elementary School campus on May 30, the scene was precisely that – and exactly what Eric Engler had in mind when he developed the ...

A majority of respondents to a U.S. Postal Service survey voted in favor of changing 11 county mailing addresses from "Richmond" to "Henrico," county officials announced last week. The change will take place at the end of the year. County officials believe that Henrico has been losing at least $5 million annually in tax revenue that is mistakenly sent to Richmond as a result of the mailing address confusion.
