Zakia Jemaceye, the winner of Season 2 of Esta’s Drag Race, sits down for a one-on-one interview. Who is Zakia Jemaceye? Where did she come from and how did she get her name? I am a native of Richmond, born under the sign of Capricorn, an only child. Attended Richmond Public Schools and graduated from John Marshall High School. I got my name , my first name from my cousin as a joke , that if I ever did drag that my name would be Zakia , ...

Observed every November 20, the Transgender Day of Remembrance honors the memory of those lives lost to anti-transgender violence. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, who was murdered in November of 1998. A transwoman from Boston, Massachusetts, Hester was viciously stabbed just one month after the gay-bashing death of Matthew Shepherd. While Shepherd's case created a media firestorm, Ms. Hester's death went practically unnoticed. The Transgender Day of Remembrance raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people and mourns the lives of transgender people who might otherwise be forgotten. This year's observance will be held ...

In Richmond, there is definitely a lesbian community, but you are either “in” the crowd with them or not. I have lived here almost ten years and in this time I have met very few and far between “femme” lesbians. I have often wondered why that is. Police estimate that she was stabbed numerous times. When the press began to report the story, Hester was constantly referred to as "he" and "male." One paper even reported that she was a "transvestite leading a double life." Her murder was the catalyst for the transgender community to band together and demand respect from the media. After pressure from family and community leaders, Hester's case was ...

She knew she was not a man, but the only other option of the day was woman. What complicated matters was that she was attracted to women. She learned the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity, and transitioned to female in 1986. Settling in San Francisco, she created several performance pieces to communicate the paradox her life had become. Bornstein teaches workshops and has published several books.
