Calling all cinesters, aspiring filmmakers and movie fans in general…this is your week to geek out on Godard and go crazy with a whole week’s worth of documentaries and experimental films at the James River Film Festival.
The festival gets “reeling” this Sunday to the next, April 12 to April 19, at a variety of locations around town. The festival will include over 22 films and will begin and end with the anti-war documentary Body of War.
This 87-minute film documents the coming home of 25-year-old Tomas Young, who was shot in the spine and paralyzed after his one-week long military service in Iraq.
Another featured film is Monster Road, a documentary of the life and work of Claymation master Bruce Bickford. Bickford will also host a three-hour hands-on Claymation workshop at VCU on April 17 as a part of the festival. The workshop is limited to 15 people.
Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation, a shot-for-shot remake by three 10-year-old boys from Mississippi, will also be highlighted at the festival. Read more on our story and watch the trailer.
Films will be shown at eight different locations: The Byrd Theatre, Carver Healing Arts Center, The Firehouse Theatre, Movieland at Boulevard Square, Richmond Public Library, VCU’s Grace Street Theatre and VCU’s Pollak Building.
This is event is sponsored and coordinated by Richmond Moving Image Co-op, an all-volunteer staffed non-profit organization.
Admission costs vary from $6 to $10. Free showings will be included. Proceeds go the funding of next year’s James River Film Festival.
