When she first arrived in Richmond, Annette Holt discovered dance activities for youth were minimal and did not reflect the city's urban demographics. She began her dream of teaching dance to urban youth by traveling to various Richmond housing projects and community centers to teach introductory ballet.
Thirty years later, Holt is being honored by the students she helped raise.
The City Dance Theatre program presents “An Evening with City Dance” on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 8 p.m. at the Gottwald Playhouse at Richmond CenterStage. The performance will honor Holt's 30 years of teaching dance to the children of Richmond.
Current dancers and alumni of the award-winning City Dance Theatre will perform modern, jazz and ballet works choreographed by Rodney Williams, Willie Hinton and Talita Jackson.
The performance will benefit Friends of City Dance, a nonprofit group that supports City Dance Theatre and the City Dance Program.
The City Dance Program of Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities provides structured, longitudinal, ballet-centered yet affordable dance education to 450 Richmond young people age 3 to 18. City Dance Theatre is the program’s semi-professional youth modern dance company which performs and competes regularly.
“City Dance Theatre offers absorbing and entertaining choreography danced with skill and passion,” says Friends of City Dance Vice President Scott Sibley. “Last spring City Dance Theatre won 14 first-place awards at a dance competition and received a standing ovation from an audience of 1,800 at Dogwood Dell last July.”
According to Sibley, Holt was instrumental in making the City Dance program a success through her hard work, love and dedication.
“Her kind and loving leadership has touched the lives of so many underprivileged youths in our city and we want to honor her with this performance.”
