The Dining Dish

It’s amazing to me that anyone is able to work in this heat, but somehow restaurant owners are getting it done.

At long last Sweet 95, the new ice cream parlor next to (and by the same people as) Kitchen 64 is finally open. The ice cream spot is cash-only for now, but isn’t a trip to the ATM worth it in all this heat?

While you’re there, you might as well head down the road a few feet and check out Stronghill Dining Company. Yeah, we know, it’s been open for awhile, but not like this.

The folks at Stronghill have been tweaking the dining room (pulling out tables to make way for a lounge and a bigger bar-area) and the menu, adding affordable sandwiches and small plates to the dinner menu and a nightly entrée special (which is posted on their Facebook page).

The menu is still being tweaked, but will be upload to their website as soon as possible, but for now dinner specials include things like pulled-pork pizza, fried chicken, barbecue and a lamb and local greens casserole – they’re calling it a "casual bistro menu."

On top of that, the restaurant is working out an expanded happy hour with tons of great drinks specials daily (in the $3 range) which, according the Facebook, are available all night long.

Stronghill is now open Tuesday – Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., till 11 p.m. on the weekends and for Sunday brunch (closed Sunday night and Monday).

And speaking of renovations, if you had a hankering for Country Style Donuts but couldn’t get in the door these last two weeks, it’s no wonder – they were closed for renovations. But the interior is almost done and this Williamsburg Road spot will reopen on Thursday, Aug. 19.

The Twitterverse is also aflame with news that the Corner Café, the little Museum District spot will be closed through the weekend while the new owners take care of some housekeeping and a new menu of burgers, sandwiches and bar food. It should reopen on Monday.

And if anyone happened to call Ruchee Express, the Indian takeout place by VCU, over the weekend and had someone scream at them that the restaurant was closed before hanging up on them (allegedly) then they might like to know that the place has new owners and should reopen soon as a smoothie spot.

In the Works

The word on the street is the Cellar Door, the new place going in the former … whatever was last in the basement of Stuart Circle and Monument Ave., should be opening any day now. Parkside Café is still in the works and Fish Bowl Bistro & Bar in Shockoe Slip is shooting for a Labor Day opening (stay tuned for details on that later in the week).

Closed

Shahi Kitchen and Bistro R are now closed.
