The Shockoes are alive with the sound of new restaurant construction.
A few more restaurants plan to make their way onto the dining scene, right on the heels of Fresca on Addison and Café Ole opening, and this time many of them seem to be clustered in the Shockoes.
Mingles Restaurant & Lounge is now open in the former Aztek Grill spot at 1726 E. Main St. Mingles is the new, improved version (and new location) of Caribbean Mingles, which used to be located at 17 W. Main St.
Calling itself "the first burger joint in the Mid-Atlantic to source 100 percent of … ingredients from local suppliers," Boom Boom Burgers is in the works at1703 E. Franklin St., in Shockoe Bottom.
The restaurant is currently under construction and shooting for a January 2011 opening.
Off the Hookah, an RVA branch of two successful Florida restaurants, is under construction in the spot near The Hat Factory. From what we hear, from folks who have pressed their faces against the glass, it looks like a lot of money is going into the décor with an emphasis on an Egyptian theme. And if the other two locations are any indication, this spot is more club than restaurant, but in the Shockoes, that might be a good thing.
In other parts of town, the old Manakin Grill is now Country Folks Grille and Saloon.
And, of course, Parkside Café is still in the works in South Richmond and Enoteca Sogno on the Northside.
Finally, and sadly, The Patio, which was the old DD33, is now closed.
