This weekend, it’s all about the children at Richmond CenterStage.

On Jan. 23 and 24, Genworth BrightLights Education Center presents “Lights Up,” which includes over 30 workshops, master classes, demonstrations and live performances at Richmond CenterStage to educate and excite youth from infants to age 18.

The Resident Companies of Richmond CenterStage — including the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Richmond Ballet, the African-American Repertory Theater, Richmond Shakespeare, Theatre IV, Barksdale Theatre, the Virginia Opera, SPARC and the Elegba Folklore Society — will all be participating.

The weekend also features outside organizations including the Latin Ballet of Virginia, Richmond Boys Choir and Friends of City Dance.

“It ranges from learning about opera to jazz classes to wig making to how to put on makeup,” said Richmond CenterStage spokesman Jay Smith. “There’s something for every age group.

“Part of our mission is teaching the arts and using them to teach core subject matter,” he continued. “It’s very hands-on and interactive. The children will actually be doing things.”

There are also two “Lights Up” performances featuring the young performers of Resident Companies – Saturday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m.

Smith said that people don’t have to have a specific workshop to sign up and are welcome to check out all that is offered.

“A lot of people will come by for whatever part interests them. Hopefully, we will reach a lot of new people who haven’t spent too much time with the arts.”

Registration opens at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and continues throughout the day in the Carpenter Theatre Lobby. All the programs and performances are free, but registration and tickets are required.
