We love Richmond’s dining scene, but we’re hungry for so much more.
I know, we had a piano bar, but when we say piano bar, we don’t mean fine dining with classical accompaniment – we mean sing-along – Billy Joel favorites, some Beatles and maybe even a few pop culture classics. I was in a restaurant in Kansas City, MO recently and heard a piano version of Ice, Ice Baby. We need that here. Need it.
Soup and Salad Place
We can count on one hand the number of independent restaurants that really rock out a great meal salad, so why not open a place specifically dedicated to fabulous soups and salads – and not just for lunch!
Specialty Dining
Attention chefs and aspiring restaurant owners, do you do one thing really, really well? Then do it well and serve it up to Richmond! If you make the best potpies, bring it on! Take a teeny tiny little corner of retail space and serve us some amazing potpies with wine and beer paired to go with it. Don’t take your potpie and shuffle it into the middle of a hodgepodge menu of sort of comfort food (unless you do it well), plus salmon and Chicken Oscar, and serve up a bunch of bland, mediocre dishes all because you make a mean potpie. Just don’t.
Bakeries
I have a dream of living in Richmond and waking up, groggy and hungry on a Sunday morning, and walking to my local bakery to enjoy fresh croissants and maybe a cookie or two. Except I can’t, because, A. I don’t live in walking distance to Carytown; and B. Bakeries aren’t open on Sundays (or much outside of business hours).
Burgers
Back to one staffer’s Kansas City trip – while there I ate the best burger I’ve ever had in my life. Ever. And I had it in a place that’s almost exactly like Legend, except this version of Legend serves up a menu of over 10 of the most amazing burgers you’ve ever eaten. Burgers and a Brewery, who’d of thunk it. Imagine, Legend Brewery with the best burgers in town. Dare to dream, Richmond.
More Waterfront Dining
If The Boathouse can do it, others can too.
Better Downtown Lunches
A restaurant that’s not revolting near the downtown RTD building. Or a salad bar. Or both. We’re just saying ...
Bring it to the 'Burbs
How about some more independent restaurants like in the Fan and Carytown farther out in the suburbs, like Chesterfield and Henrico? Just because we live in the ‘burbs doesn’t mean we want to eat at Chili’s and Outback Steakhouse exclusively.
Bring it Out of the Fan / Carytown
We love that Richmond has these pockets of dining destinations (the Fan, Carytown, the Shockoes), but what about the rest of the city? There’s the Southside, Northside, Church Hill, Near West End. Our city spreads in four different directions from downtown, why can’t restaurants follow?
Stop Trying so Hard
Stop attempting to be the greatest restaurant in Richmond. Have good food and good service. The rest will take care of itself.
