This Friday, Oct. 22, Cinébistro, the first dine-and-watch movie theater in Richmond since the Cinema and Draft House, opens at Stony Point Fashion Park.

Life-long Richmonders are familiar with the concept: you sit, your order, you eat and drink and you watch, but the new Cinébistro at Stony Point Fashion Park ‘aint no Cinema and Draft House.

The six-theater Cinébistro shows first-run movies with luxury accommodations: plush, spacious leather theater chairs, complete with cup holder and swiveling tray. And, unlike the now defunct Draft House, at Cinébistro the dining happens before the film.

Here’s how it works: when you buy your tickets (either online in advance or at the theater) you select your reserved seating at the box office. Once inside, a server takes your order, whether it’s cocktails, dinner and wine, a few appetizers, popcorn and a soda, or just nothing at all. A food runner brings your food and drinks, and then comes back to claim the dishes.

Ordering and busing go on right up until the previews end, and then that’s it, the staff disappears so as not to distract from the film. If you want another cocktail, you can hit the bar in the lobby.

The menu includes all the traditional movie staples (popcorn and candy), plus appetizers like Bay Crab Dip ($13), Grilled Flatbread with Balsamic Figs and Brie ($11), and entrees like Crab Cakes ($23), NY Strip ($23) and pastas in the $15-range. There are also sandwiches and burgers ($12-$15) and desserts for $8 and $10. The cocktail menu includes a full bar and 40 wines by the glass.

Cinébistro recommends that diners arrive 30 minutes before show time so they can enjoy their in-theater meal before the show starts, but, again, orders are taken until the movie starts, and Cinébistro also has a bar/lounge where patrons can enjoy a pre or post film drink or bite.

Perhaps best of all, for Richmonders who are used to movie-going in teenager-packed theaters, Cinébistro is strictly at 21 and older operation. Cinébistro has several 3D capable screens and plans to show sports and culture events (think Super Bowl), plus cult favorites like "The Wizard of Oz." Showings start at 3 p.m. on weekdays and noon on Saturday and Sunday. Ticket prices are $7.50 for shows before 3 p.m., $10 thereafter, with an additional $3.50 charge for all 3D movies.
