In case you haven’t been paying attention, urban exploration (the examination of the normally unseen or off-limits parts of urban areas or industrial facilities) has gained in popularity over the last decade due to an increasing American landscape of eroding and abandoned city buildings
As jobs have gone the way of overseas and wherever else, former factories, warehouses, office buildings, abandoned homes and inner city schools are divorced from society.
Enter urban exploration.
Or, in Richmond’s case, Decayed Richmond, a "local collective" committed to capturing and depicting urban exploration in Richmond. Their main objective is to photograph and film buildings or structures from a bygone era that has been forgotten. Think of Decayed Richmond as like the television documentary Cities of the Underworld that aired on the History channel.
And now Decayed Richmond is hoping to turn their mission into a documentary film, with the help of Richmonders and a Kickstarter campaign.
They are trying to raise $3,000 for extra equipment they need to get this project produced, filmed and pressed to DVD. They are at $1,600, and are close enough to taste their accomplishment.
They are now asking that the citizens of Richmond help them by pledging any amount, so they can finish the documentary. Hopefully it will be just a matter of months before they premiere the film at the Byrd Theatre, and hopefully enter the film in a few festivals such as The Margaret Mead Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and the Virginia Film Festival.
Depending on what amount donators pledge, they can be rewarded with anything from the service of wedding photography, a coffee table book of their photography, framed photographs of Richmond, skateboard decks, a copy of the DVD, to, yes, even a producing credit in the film.
