Attend opening night on Friday
It’s magical. There’s something about catching a sunset and listening to great music at the Altria Stage that just can’t be beat. Walking from stage to stage in the dark with thousands of other Richmonders, buzzing about what’s next. And knowing that you have two more whole days to do it all over again.
Check out the contests this year.
Totally new. And supposed to be one of the hopping-est spots at the Festival. Head to the Virginia Folklife Stage for mandolin contests, guitar contests, turkey call contests, oyster shucking contests and more. People love it. Read more about here.
It’s awesome. This year, they’ll have Native American headdresses, Chinese lantern making (keep and use at InLight), a puppet show, a kazoo parade, a petting zoo with a kangaroo, a monkey and a lemur. And much more.
Eat something good.
Like chicken terriyaki on a stick, vegan sandwiches from Goatacodo (they’re really good) or crab cake sandwiches and shucked oysters from Sam Miller’s. Over 31 food vendors will be serving up dishes from all over the world. The only problem is finding enough room in your stomach.
Dance.
You haven’t been to the Folk Festival if you haven’t danced. The dance floor at the Dominion Dance Pavilion gets pretty packed, but people have been known to bust out a jam pretty much anywhere on the premises.
And of course, put a drop in the bucket to keep the festival going.
