If you haven't seen the great blue heron rookery in downtown Richmond and you want to hear from the experts how significant this unique mix of urban and wild is for a city, take a tour with James River Park manager and naturalist Ralph White on Saturday mornings from Feb. 18-March 31.

The two-hour tours start at 10 a.m. and are held in conjunction with the Richmond Audubon Society. Meet at the entrance to the 14th Street whitewater boater's takeout located at the northeast end of the Mayo Bridge. Tours are $5 per person.

People may park at the Pipeline Overlook lot at 12th and Byrd or at the entrance to the 14th Street boater's takeout, on the grass, facing the floodwall. Vehicles may stay until noon.

Note: You must be able to climb down a short ladder, walk on a narrow metal catwalk over water, and shimmy under a railing to reach the viewing site. No pets allowed as they frighten the birds and can't walk on the metal grid.
