Total Soccer Show: Hot Tub Time Machine

Total Soccer Show: Hot Tub Time Machine

Argentina's Diego Maradona vs Belgium

This week’s Total Soccer Show is a podcast of two halves; one in the past, one very much in the present.

In the first half, we jump in the patented WRIR time machine and take a good long look at soccer in the 1980s. It was a time of permed hair, short-shorts (way too short, in hindsight) and magnificent #10s. What’s a #10 you ask? It’s the classic playmaker, the player with enough technique and vision and—dare we say it—magic, to do decide a game on their own. Guys like Diego Maradona, for example.

We go round the Total Soccer Show and, position by position and by popular vote, pick our 1980s best XI. If you know your ‘80s soccer, we hope you’ll enjoy hearing our arguments for legends like Franco Baresi and Ruud Gullit. If you don’t, then listen and learn a little more about soccer in the decade that fashion forgot.

In the second half of the show, we address the big story of the week: England national team coach Fabio Capello quitting his job, essentially following a disagreement between himself and his employers about how to handle accusations (and criminal charges) that one of his players racially abused another player this past October. Not a fun topic, but definitely a debate worthy one.

In happier news, the Total Soccer Show will soon be reaching a  wider audience. We’ll continue to be on WRIR 97.3 FM every Thursday afternoon, but this coming Monday, February 13, we’ll be on SportsRadio910 AM here in Richmond (and however far the station’s signal reaches) from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., so soccer will take its place alongside the big boy sports on a major radio network here in RVA.
