The big kickoff of the Spring 2012 Central Virginia Soccer Association season is less than a month away. Before February is over, around 2,000 amateur soccer players and 100 teams in the Richmond area will begin battle, with each other and—more often than not—with the referees. The poor referees show up, keep the peace and keep everyone safe, and in return they get 90 minutes of players on both teams disagreeing with them. Loudly.
Some of these disagreements happen because players (and this includes members of the Total Soccer Show team) don’t know the laws of the game. We think we do. But we really don’t, because what we know is sometimes a series of abbreviated misinterpretations of the laws of the game that we’ve picked up from television and elsewhere.
To redress the balance we sat down with Richmond referee Scott Zawadzki, who has 15 years experience with the whistle. Scott set us straight on how the game works and dispelled some refereeing myths, like explaining why a two-footed tackle isn’t always a red card.
