iPods and the iPhone
We're going to blow your mind for a second. Ten years ago, there was no iPod. None. The first iPod came out in October 2001. Before that, people walked around with this thing called a Walkman. If you had one with a CD player, you we're pretty cool.
TV
"Lost," "Mad Men," "Project Runway," "The Office," "30 Rock," "Six Feet Under." We could go on and on … the 2000s were a great decade for TV. Much better than the '80s, with all that "Jake and the Fatman" and "Murder She Wrote."
"To Catch a Predator"
Speaking of TV, before the '90s pedophiles were free to roam the Internet and prey on unsuspecting minors … at least without the threat of a TV audience watching. But not in the 2000s, thanks to Chris Hansen and his, "why don't you have a seat" tagline.
SurvivingY2K
Think back, for a moment, to a decade ago today. You weren't out Christmas shopping or trimming the tree, you were stocking up on batteries, water bottles and ammo for the end of civilization as we knew it. We survived. Can you believe it?
Katrina
Speaking of the end of civilization … We survived Y2K, but New Orleans barely made it out of Katrina. Did we love it? Of course not … but Kanye West on live TV saying George Bush hates black people … well, that we loved. Taylor Swift got off easy.
Britney Meltdown
OMG, people, omg. Do you remember where you were the day you heard that Britney Spears was pregnant. Again? What about when she shaved her head? How about when she went after someone's car with baseball bat (or was it an umbrella?). Oh, Britney ... we miss the crazy.
Social Media
A decade ago we didn't Twitter, we didn't Facebook or "friend" people or write on anyone's wall. We didn't even MySpace, not until 2003. And, OK, we don't MySpace now, but how did we communicate back then? Email? From a desktop computer? Were we crazy?
The Rise of …
The cell phone, people. Did you have a cell phone in the '90s? If so, you were in the minority. And if you did, chances are you had a landline to back it up. But no more. We are now a cell phone culture. We text, we email, we surf the net, we even listen to music, all from the convenience of a tiny little hand-held device. Sadly, we remember when call waiting and voicemail were impressive.
OK, Google crept in during the '90s but its widespread use and, more importantly, its use as a verb, didn't come about until the mid-2000. In 2006 "google," meaning "to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet," was added to the dictionary. How do we know? We googled it. And now we wish Microsoft Word automatic spell check would catch up.
Wikipedia
Hello! How do you think we came up with all of this information? Wikipedia, our beloved online encyclopedia, launched in 2001 … at least according to Wikipedia, so really, we're not sure if it's true or not. Or if any of this is. But if it's good enough for Wikipedia, it's good enough for us.
That's Part One. Look for Part Two Next week when we'll have 10 more of our favorite things from the 2000s. In the meantime, share yours in the comments section below.
