Smoky’s Spay/Neuter Clinic along with the Richmond SPCA has reached a great milestone in the effort to make Richmond a no kill community.
On Monday, July 19, Smoky’s performed their 75,000th surgery to a two-month-old kitten named Bree.
In 2002, the Robins-Starr Humane Center opened the state of the art spay/neuter clinic and began performing surgeries on homeless animals all over Richmond. In just eight years they have helped 75,000 pets.
The effort to fix as many animals as possible is fueled by the desire to see fewer homeless animals and make Richmond a no kill zone for stray pets. The clinic can now perform 14,000 surgeries a year (That's 75 a day).
The Richmond SPCA also makes it possible for any pet owner to get their animal surgery. Nearly 60 percent of the surgeries have been performed for free and rates can be changed based on income.
The spay and neuter effort has been a central commitment of the Richmond SPCA and Smoky’s Spay/Neuter Clinic for a long time and the money and time spent have already started to pay off. Pet homelessness is much lower, and many strays with the surgery already performed which makes adoption much easier.
This milestone is a great step towards the no kill community Richmonders desire. The seven kittens spayed or neutered on Monday made history for animal lovers and the SPCA wants to keep working to ensure the safety of Richmond’s pets.
