The days of buying “fresh but already frozen” fruits and vegetables are over for Whole Food Market shoppers.

The opening of Whole Foods Market Village Garden, at the West Broad Village in Glen Allen, marks the opening of the first garden to provide on-site produce to its store and the first opportunity for Richmonders to get straight-from-the-vine produce at a grocery store.

Markel-Eagle Partners LLC, who manages West Broad Village, donated an acre of land to Whole Foods Market in order to provide Richmond with the freshest produce available.

The Village Garden was built by, and will be maintained by an organization called Backyard Farmer, with the help of Whole Foods Market employees. They will grow squash, tomatoes, peppers, melons, plus fruit trees and berry bushes. Also, a portion of each crop will be donated to the Virginia Food Bank.

The garden opens to the public on Saturday, June 26.
