The popular micro-blogging website has a home in Richmond and a fervent user-base. Here's a bunch of tumblrs to get you started.
By now, the growing support for the blogging platform Tumblr has reached deafening levels. The popular platform just hit 10,000,000,000 posts on Friday, Sept. 9, and boasts more than 28 million blogs, on everything from Newsweek, to GQ to multiple meme-centric blogs, many concerning the trite topic of hipsters (Look At This F***ing Hipster, Unhappy Hipsters, Dads are the Original Hipsters).
For a site that makes so much noise, there’s got to be sometime to its magic, right? So let’s take a moment to dissect a few of the more popular Tumblr blogs emerging from our fair River City.
The defacto tumblr when it comes to things Richmond. Dirty Richmond’s Brian McDaniel captures the finest Richmond fashions with his trusty camera as he travels the streets as a young mover-and-shaker. In addition to sartorialesque street shots, Brian features businesses, individuals and causes in Richmond attempting to make a difference and contributing to the creative fabric that holds us together.
Lurking in the dark and forgotten corners of our fair old city, Decayed Richmond is always searching for the abandoned next spot to feature. The odd beauty captured in the broken, abandoned and forgotten homes, schools and businesses is breathtaking, and submissions of your own decayed Richmond are always welcomed.
The Richmond Comedy Coalition is Richmond’s premier improv team. In the fallout of the long-running Comedy Sportz Theater, a number of splinter-groups of improvisers picked-up the pieces and attempted to continue bringing their brand of improvised comedy to the masses. The Richmond Comedy Coalition, the youngest and, arguably, best-designed group out there, quickly found a home in downtown art galleries and began building their empire, that now includes two monthly shows, a training center and, soon, a live improv show from the home of the last Richmonder without power. Their tumblr is a mixture of information about their goings on, funny things happening around the city and the world, and creative posts about the nature of comedy.
Rumors has positioned themselves as the purveyors not only of young Richmond's style, but also culture as well. In addition to featuring items from their consignment store, they showcase the best of cutting-edge fashion and sponsor endless events around the city.
The Blaaahg constantly features the coolest in cutting edge art, design and culture from RVA and beyond. Follow along and learn more than you ever thought possible about underground cultures that you never knew existed.
The goal of Richmond Neighborhoodr, a local sub-site of a national collection of blogs, is to showcase and feature the best of Richmond on tumblr and beyond. The content is mostly curated from existing tumblr blogs, but occasionally features items that would have an extended life on tumblr, and accepts submissions of all content types with the hopes of fostering the creative pursuits of the city.
