"Apparently we no longer need to know that the exit off the belvidere bridge leads to 2nd street. [What] happened to the sign? @CityRichmondVA" - @srbrtsn
The big green exit sign for 2nd Street northbound from the Robert E. Lee Bridge that used to be fixed to a huge pole is missing. It was a little more than the midpoint of the bridge when traveling north.
I was told it may have been missing since September. Did it come down in a storm? Stolen? No, its too big to steal, and too dangerous, especially with the winds and the height of the Lee Bridge. Plus, somebody would have noticed it being stolen, right?
I looked down into the shallow waters of James River just east of the bridge and sure enough, I think I caught a glimpse of a metal rectangle about 75 yards east of the bridge in the center of the river. Who has a canoe and a wetsuit? Let's save the city some money!
I emailed Sharon North, public information manager for the City of Richmond Department of Public Works, to get more information on the lost sign.
"We don't know exactly when or how it came down," she wrote back. "We are in the process of getting bids/quotes from contractors on the costs. Once we've accepted a quote and give the contractor notice to proceed they will make the new sign and install it. We're estimating the entire process will be complete by mid-March."
In the meantime, it shouldn't hamper your ability to find 2nd Street, as there is a sign toward the south end of the bridge to warn you. Drive safe!
Oh, and for any paddlers, if you see the sign and want to snag it, please let the City of Richmond know. Maybe we could get the city's fire & rescue divers some practice by getting it out of the river?
