A few weeks ago, we announced that we would be looking for the Worst Traffic Light in Richmond (and surrounding counties).
We hoped that we’d get one or two submissions to find a few poorly timed / often run local traffic lights that we weren’t already aware of, so we called on readers to send in some of their picks.
And boy did you. It turns out frustrating traffic lights is a very Richmond-area thing. So now we’re breaking it down by city / county, and from here, we’re going to put it to a vote and ask you, readers, who has the worst traffic light in each jurisdiction.
Then we’ll look at the worst overall. First we did Chesterfield, then Richmond; this time, Richmond proper. So take a look at the list below (some appear twice, we know, but the write-ins were so fun, we wanted to share them all), and then tell us in the comments which light you think is the worst – in Henrico.
Henrico
1. Pump and West Broad. It stays green about three seconds!
2. Stillman Pkwy and W Broad Street. Light stays green long enough for only 2 to 3 cars crossing over W Broad (and that's only if they are driving really fast).
3. The lights at Parham and Three Chopt always have drivers running the red lights.
4. Pump/Pouncey Tract and Broad or the left turn onto Broad if you're coming north on Gaskins. Avoid, avoid, avoid!
5. Ridgefield and John Rolfe.....if you're turning left. It's apparently on a sensor and if you don't pull up EXACTLY on the line, not behind it and not over it, it will NEVER turn green. That light drives me bananas!
6. Parham & Patterson takes forever. It takes 4 -5, if not more, cycles just to continue straight down the road.
7. Totally agree about N. Parham and Mayland. I can't usually get to the turn lane coming off North Parham exit from I-64 West because it's such a disaster with the blocked lanes for the second left at Quarter Mill. Mayland is the center street for a multitude of apartment complexes and with the large influx of residents along this route, it becomes dangerous and way too tricky for the confusion of that left turn off Parham.
8. Three Chopt & Patterson. SLOOOOW...
9. Patterson & Maybeury—SLOOOOOOOW
10. Azalea/Dumbarton and Brook Rd....no matter if you are the only car sitting there it still cycles thru each light until five minutes later it gets to yours.
11. Just about a block outside of the city: Azalea and Brook. Only one direction travels at a time; all of the time. Not really dangerous, but infuriating.
12. I'll add my vote for the Broad St. & Pump/Pouncey Tract. I lived in Northern Virginia for most of my adult life, and this one ranks right up there with some of the worst I've ever encountered.
13. Parham & Mayland in the West End. The whole intersection needs to be gutted and replaced with a roundabout or Jersey-style jughandle. To get from the 64 offramp/Parham north to westbound Mayland you have to cut across 3 lanes of traffic quickly, or otherwise you miss the turn. Then when you turn left on Mayland, traffic turning left on Quarter Mill (with no turn lane) backs up and spills into Parham.
14. Parham and Patterson near Regency Square. Long, poorly timed, AND in an area with poorly timed traffic lights on every block. Hate driving in the west end, can't wait to move this summer.
15. Agree with Pump at Broad being the worst. Also, the new left turn signal pattern and the new marked lines are not aligned with the sensors. So on Pump road going straight on to Pouncey Tract if you are in the right lane and the only car (at night), the signal does not go green ever.
16. Lakeside Ave/Hermitage Rd - Without a doubt the worst traffic light in Richmond is the signal to turn left from Lakeside Avenue southbound onto Westbrook Avenue. The Lakeside Ave/Hermitage Rd (they merge there) is a very long light. If you haven't approached the left turn lane within 4 feet of the light, nearly a minute before it changes, the turn signal does not activate. Oftentimes you sit there for two complete cycles of Lakeside/Hermitage and Westbrook traffic to travel before the turn signal activates. It is maddening when you're trying to get to work with no other alternative.
17. Try Twin Hickory and Nuckols Road.
Every morning, I have to stop at this light to turn left onto Nuckols Road from Wyndham Forest. I start noticing how frequently cars run the red light… I mean if I have the green light, and a car is still speeding through the light, that means they have a red light, right? I have been keeping tracking since December 1st and EVERY morning, at least one car comes speeding through a red light. So, in the last 60 days, I have personally witnessed a 100% running red light situation.
I now wait before I proceed on MY green light… ignoring the honking horns behind me.
18. Patterson and Maybeury The timing is awful.
