When we heard about CultureWorks’ new initiative to offer its donors the option of a free tattoo, we thought it might well be the coolest donor gift ever.
Anyone can give its financial supporters a free coffee mug, tote bag or umbrella – but a tattoo, to the residents of the third most tattooed city in America! It’s perfect.
The idea is simple (and the initiative of CultureWorks president John Bryan) – any donor who gives $150 or more has the option of getting a tattoo – and not just any tattoo either, it’s a replica of one of the oldest known tattoo, which “consists of three parallel lines … approximately one inch in diameter.”
The design is still being finalized and will be tatted be River City Tattoo Co., but to kick things off, the local arts and culture organization is looking for Richmonders to nominate 10 of its citizens to be the first to go under the needle.
That’s right, they want you, Richmond, to pick the first 10 to get this tattoo, ideally local leaders and well-known personalities, according to CultureWorks, and Richmond.com is here to help get things started with our own Top 10 Recommendations.
Of course, we thought, once River City has these local celebrities in the chair, they might as well go ahead and add a tattoo, or two, so we’re also offering our recommendations for extra ink.
Our Top 10 Recommendations for the CultureWorks Tattoo:
Jim Duncan
NBC12’s Chief Meteorologist can just stick to the three lines, but every time he gets the forecast wrong, he needs to commit to adding one.
Bobby Ukrop
A beer bottle with a slash through it. Unless he already has it.
Gene Cox
With a cult-like resurgence in popularity thanks to Twitter, we think the NBC12 anchor needs to give thanks where thanks is due and ink up with aTwitter Bird icon tat.
Christina Newton
You know the woman who started Curated Culture and First Fridays Art Walk is probably sporting some ink, but she might as well double-down while she’s in the chair and get ... a map of Broad Street and the First Fridays boundaries … and most likely have it covered in red tape.
Doug Wilder
Can you get a denim leisure suit tattoo?
Kathy Graziano
There’s only one tattoo that we can imagine the Richmond City Council president and Fourth District representative sporting and it’s the Forest Hill neighborhood tree logo.
Kevin Clay
The founder and editor of GayRVA.com should take it old-school with the rainbow flag. Simple, classic, timeless.
Edward L. Ayers
The University of Richmond President may well be the most beloved man in Richmond, so if he hasn’t had "I heart RVA" tatted onto his arm yet, he needs to get moving.
Mayor Dwight C. Jones
Richmond’s mayor needs to be done with subtlety and have his ink get straight to the point and simply read: I AM Mayor.
Member of GWAR
Um, actually, we think they’re all good on the tattoos. Maybe they should add a piercing while they’re there?
