"Why are there painted fish in the city?" - S.K.
Great question, especially for those new to Richmond. There were about 200 fish and they weren't just painted. There was glitter, sequins, rhinestones, mosaic and all kinds of designs.
First it was cows in Chicago, then mermaids in Norfolk and you may have seen horses in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A little more than 10 years ago, Richmond joined the trend toward decorating downtown sites with public sculptures of a certain theme. The 1708 Gallery, which coordinated the project, chose rockfish to promote the resurgence of the fish in the Chesapeake Bay.
There were more than 200 Go Fish! sculptures around town and you can still find several remaining if you know where to look. Richmonders were proud of this project and it seemed to be a fun and positive civic event.
In an online auction in 2001, more than 260 registered users placed more than 800 bids. About 70 local nonprofit organizations benefited from the proceeds of more than $310,000 from the event, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch archives.
There were more than 200 fish spread all over town and each had a fun name, like "Paisley Fish," "Bette Davis Eyes," "Jophish - A Fish of Many Colors," "The Pied Striper," "Pop Rockfish," "Save Our Shad - A Tribute to the James River Fishways," "Leonardo Da Fishi - A Very Special Catch," "Holy Mackerel," and so many more. Richmond.com even sponsored one called "Space Fish."
The 1708 Gallery, which coordinated the project, even published a book containing accounts and full-color photos of all but two of the fish (those were apparently moved before photos could be shot), according to the Times-Dispatch. "Go Fish! Richmond's Premiere Outdoor Art Exhibit also includes fun facts about fish, nuggets of language inspired by fish, and fish quotations from literature."
Want the full list of names? The Richmond Times-Dispatch archive rocks, never forget that!
