It’s finally official.
Today, Dec. 15, 2010, is Tacky Lights Day.
Yep, you read that right.
After the very first "tacky lights" tour was organized by Richmond radio deejay Barry "Mad Dog" Gottlieb in 1986…
After being named "the capital of the lighting universe" by BusinessWeek…
And a "Christmas beacon" for tacky lights from Forbes Magazine…
After being featured on NPR for our tacky lights...
And TLC's "Crazy Christmas Lights" TV show...
Mayor Dwight Jones has named Dec. 15, 2010, "Richmond Tacky Light Tour Day."
Which basically means that Tacky Lights are being recognized by the mayor and its 25th anniversary here in Richmond.
It also means that Richmonders are encouraged to get out today and see the Tacky Lights. Seats are full on the special 25th anniversary tour with "Mad Dog" on the Winn Bus (read more about that here). But there are plenty of other fun ways to see the tacky lights:
-First, you can plan your own tour with our Tacky Lights Guide. We’ve got a map, directions, slideshows, tours, etc.
-If you have a mobile phone, you can take our Tacky Lights Tour with you and get directions on the go. Just search for "Richmond Tacky Lights" on your smartphone and you’ll find it.
-Seats are still available for the 2BNB Tacky Lights Tour today, Dec. 15. Go to their website to sign up and donate at http://www.2bnb.org/donate via PayPal. They will hold a spot for you under the name of your donation. Suggested donation is $10 per person, seating is limited. The bus will leave Bandito's at 7:30 p.m. and will return around 10 p.m. Drink specials will be offered at Bandito's for those going on our tour.
-Book a limo and go in style. Check out the full rundown here.
