Valentine’s Day falls on a Tuesday this year – next Tuesday, Feb. 14, to be exact.

Which has many of us wondering how we’re going to celebrate….

Why not celebrate this weekend?

There are a whole bunch of special Valentine’s Day events going on this weekend.

So if you want to celebrate V-Day early, we say, grab your sweetie (or not!) and check out one of these romantic-themed events:

Thursday, Feb. 9

Bergerac Booth: Valentine Making Station

Want to make your own Valentine but need a hand getting started? Stop by the “Bergerac Booth” at the Richmond Main Library where you can make a Valentine this Thursday and Friday. They’ll have supplies and card making ideas, plus a literary mastermind will be available in the "Bergerac Booth" to help you create a loving note or poem for your Valentine. For a small donation, you can also have a Polaroid picture taken of yourself to give to your special someone. 

The Garden is for Lovers’ Valentine’s Display

Treat your Valentine to hundreds of blooms at Lewis Ginter with the Garden is for Lovers Display. Check out the new color scheme in the Conservatory’s Central Palm House of pink and black foliage in the Central Palm House showcasing black elephant ears, butterfly-attracting Panama rose, hot pink canna lilies and bromeliads.

 

Friday, Feb. 10

Check out the new exhibit, "My love ten thousand times": Love and Courtship since the 18th Century at Wilton House. Find out how hand-written letters, fans, and portraits shaped romantic courtship in years gone by. Imagine Facebook in the 18th century! Plus, this is just a romantic spot, hands down. $10. Repeats daily except for Monday.

Richmond Burlesque Babies presents "The Anti-Love Doubleshot" Pt. 1 "No Heartwarming Stories"

How about a little burlesque for the broken-hearted? According to Richmond Burlesque Babies: “This is a show meant for the heartless, heartbroken, the liars, seducers, baby mommas, lovelorn and newly recovered. No heartwarming stories, no love lost, no dysfunction untouched. Just hot performances from: Autumn D'Light, Binky Daze, Lorelei Leisure & Lottie Ettington with hosting duties by new MC The Great Zwerdling.” $10.

Richmond Ballet’s Coppelia

Richmond media is all atwitter about Richmond Ballet’s romantic rendition of “Coppelia” (The Girl with the Enamel Eyes). Find out what all the fuss is about this weekend. Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances.

Sweethearts for the Arts: Speakeasy

For the hipsters and indie art lovers, get yourself dressed up in your best flapper and gangster attire for a roaring ‘20s themed benefit at Gallery 5. Hosted by drag queen extraordinaire Magnolia Jackson Pickett Burnside and featuring burlesque performances. Benefits Art on Wheels. $20 in advance, $25 at door.

Valentine’s Kids Night Out at Romp n Roll

Want a night out without the kids? Drop them off at Valentine’s Kids Night at Romp n roll for gym, art, and music activities plus a pizza party. Ages 2-5. $30 per child.

 

 

Saturday, Feb. 11

Breathless at Biograph

Check out the ultimate (sort of anti) love story “Breathless” on the big screen. Seriously, this is one of the sexiest movies of all time. Showing at the Biograph in honor of their 40th anniversary and benefitting the James River Film Society. Double feature, you’ll also get to see “Lonely Are the Brave.” $20.

The Love Tour at Maymont Mansion

Visit Maymont Mansion on Valentine’s Day weekend as elegantly costumed ladies and gentlemen relate details of the courting customs of the era. Discover the Victorian language of love as depicted in the décor of Maymont Mansion, where romantic swans, red roses and costly indulgences reflect James Dooley’s devotion to his wife Sallie. Guided tours available every half-hour; last tour begins at 4:30. $5 per person/$3 members. Reservations accepted; call 804-358-7166, ext. 329. Repeats Sunday.

PCAV Be Mine Ball

How about a fancy ball for Valentine’s Day? Head to VMFA for Prevent Child Abuse Virginia’s (PCAV) annual fundraising ball. Black tie optional. Juan Conde will be Master of Ceremonies, live music from King Edward and the BD's and ticket price includes dinner, open beer and wine bar. Black tie optional. $75.

Print Your Own Valentine’s

Make your own hand printed valentines at Studio Two Three. They're hosting an afternoon of printmaking basics for Valentine’s Day. Studio Two Three artists will be on site to help you with printmaking methods like mono printing, letterpress, relief printing, and screen printing. Collage and drawing materials will also be available to bedazzle your valentine. Kid-friendly. Donations accepted.

Ritz & Revelry presents "The Garden of Love" Valentine's Day Vaudeville Revue

Ritz & Revelry is a new vaudeville stage show paying homage to the Ziegfeld Follies. Check out their debut show at the newly revamped and reopened Hippodrome which they’ll be dedicating to St. Valentine and love. Featuring Richmond's dancing flapper duo, The Garter Snaps, acrobatic tap dancer, Chris Chaos, “sultry shaker” Ophelia Derriere, Carnegie Hall songstress Erin Devine and the Richmond Comedy Coalition. Hosted by Miss Magnolia Jackson Pickett Burnside – who is definitely getting around this weekend! Cocktail or vintage attire required. $15-20.

Simon Kidgits Club's Valentine's Day Project

Looking for a family friendly event this weekend? The Kidgits Club will be having a Valentine's Day Card Making event at Virginia Center Commons in the Food Court. Cards will be donated to a local children's hospital. Not a Kidgits member yet, don't sweat it, come check the event out for free.

Valentine’s Day Storytime

Take the kids to Barnes and Noble Short Pump for a special storytime featuring the story “Plant a Kiss” by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Other stories, free refreshments and crafts will be offered.
